Employer Donation Matching: How to Double Your Gift for Free

Many employers offer to match employee charitable donations dollar-for-dollar, sometimes up to a specific annual limit, yet a large share of eligible employees never claim this benefit — often simply because they don't know their employer offers it or don't know how to submit a match request.

How employer matching actually works

After making a donation, an employee submits a match request through their employer, typically through an internal HR portal or a dedicated matching-gift platform the company uses. The employer then sends an equivalent donation (in many programs, a full 1:1 match, though ratios vary) directly to the same charity, effectively doubling the original gift at no additional cost to the donor.

Why so many eligible donations go unmatched

Matching programs typically require the employee to actively submit a request — donations are not automatically matched just because an employee gives. Many employees are simply unaware their company offers this benefit, and unclaimed matching funds represent a significant, entirely avoidable gap between what companies are willing to give and what actually reaches charities.

Check your company's HR benefits portal or intranet for "matching gifts" or "corporate giving" programs, or ask HR directly. Many mid-size and large employers offer some form of matching, even if it isn't widely advertised internally.

What to do before you donate

If your employer offers matching, check whether the specific charity you want to support is eligible under their program before donating, since some corporate matching programs exclude certain organization types (religious organizations or political advocacy groups are commonly excluded, for instance). Submit your match request promptly after donating — many programs have submission deadlines, often within a set number of months after the original gift.
