Donor-advised funds (DAFs) have become an increasingly common giving vehicle, and 2026 tax law changes have made understanding them more relevant for donors deciding how to structure their giving.
What a donor-advised fund actually is
A DAF is an account, typically held through a sponsoring organization like a community foundation or a major financial institution's charitable arm, that lets a donor contribute money, take an immediate tax deduction for the contribution, and then recommend grants out of the fund to specific charities over time — potentially years after the original contribution.
Why donors use them
DAFs let donors separate the timing of their tax deduction from the timing of their actual giving decisions, which can be useful for donors who want to contribute a large lump sum in a high-income year but distribute it to charities gradually. They also simplify recordkeeping, since a donor gets one tax receipt for the DAF contribution rather than separate receipts for many individual charity donations throughout the year.
The tradeoff worth understanding
Money placed in a DAF is not required to be granted out to an actual operating charity within any specific timeframe under federal law, meaning funds can sit in a DAF for years without reaching a working nonprofit. Critics of DAFs point to this as a real transparency and accountability concern, since the tax deduction is claimed immediately, but the charitable impact can be significantly delayed.
Is a DAF right for you
DAFs generally make the most sense for donors making larger, less frequent charitable contributions who want tax planning flexibility, rather than for donors making small, routine gifts throughout the year — smaller routine donations are usually simpler to give directly. Under the new 2026 non-itemizer deduction, donors making modest regular gifts may find direct giving without a DAF is now more tax-advantaged than before.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I look for in a strong fundraising campaign?
A strong campaign explains the goal clearly, shows how funds will be used, shares the amount already raised, and provides enough context to judge urgency. Campaigns tied to real NGO profiles and recurring updates usually deserve more trust than vague one-paragraph appeals.
How do I verify a fundraising organization before donating?
Check whether the organization publishes audited financial statements, has a verified registration, and shows clear program spending. FundTracker trust scores surface these signals automatically across GlobalGiving campaigns so you can compare before committing.
